In an effort to get something going in my area, I sent the following to the Head of Parks and Recreation in Lowell Mass. Hopefully this might garner some interest. I believe it would be a perfect fit
I was hoping you might be able to guide me in the right direction. I believe that Lowell has a unique opportunity as it pertains to the sport of Cricket. In fact, Lowell has a very rich tradition in the sport dating back to before the Civil War along with New York and Philadelphia.
Cricket is beginning to make a comeback in America and the momentum is continually building. Presently, there is not one team of Americans that play in the United States.
Based on feedback I have received from many people across the U.S, It was recommended that I try to assemble a team(s) of Americans that would be the first in the nation and as such, would be the benefactor of much notoriety as well as publicity.
Based on informal surveys and inquiries, I am positive that there would be alot of interest to get this going. Getting the athletes is one of the easier tasks, more challenging would be getting the proper practice facilty and playing grounds.
My ultimate question is, who can I speak with in the City of Lowell to further discuss this extraordinary opportunity for both the sport of Cricket as well as the City of Lowell
Your assistance would be extremely helpful.

Well, the first little bit of snow finally arrived this morning as I made my way to the gym at the usual 5:00am. It was great to get in a really good workout. I worked on biceps, triceps, forearms and abdominal muscles. I have really been focusing on nutrition as well. Taking in as much protein as possible and it is making a difference. For those interested, here is what the daily ritual has been. Breakfast; 8 egg white omelet on wheat toast and oatmeal, Snacks: dry roasted peanuts and protein bars. Lunch; Boiled chicken breasts and salads. Dinner; is steak or chicken or 1 pound of cooked hamburger. I still have one heck of a sweet tooth so I always manage to have ice cream or cookies or whatever I can find to satisfy the craving. The onset of the cold weather is a bittersweet event for me. The positive is that I can now start snowboarding but the obvious negative is that it means the end of outside cricket practicing which is an unbelievable hardship for me. This entire journey has not been easy to say the least but I have always risen to the challenge and found a way to make it happen. The winter hardship will be no different. I can still train myself physically but as far as practicing I have come up with the following game plan. I will contact various schools and ask permission to use the gym so myself and hopefully some others, can practice our bowling, batting and fielding skills. Most important to me is my batting practice as this is where I fully believe that my greatest strengths are. I know I can be a great batsman. The gyms are more than adequate for this type of thing and I have some good connections so I am confident that I can make this happen. All I really need is just one person who can bowl it to me, that is all I ask but believe me it is easier said than done in America.

The Eternal question is “What will it take to get Americans interested in Cricket?” If you ask almost any American about Cricket, most will confuse it with Croquet and the rest will think of Badminton, in either case, they will tell you it is a fancy game played by elite country club type people. I'm sure the word boring will be mentioned. We all know this could not be further than the truth. Because I became interested in the game, researched it and eventually played it, I came to realize what I great sport it is. But sadly, I am in the extreme minority as far as Americans are concerned. To be honest, I had never seen a "real" match of Cricket until I received my copy of the Ashes 2005 3 DVD set 2 weeks ago. Within 5 minutes of watching this, my respect, interest and motivation was increased tenfold. As they say, A picture is worth a thousands words. If I can get my American team assembled, at the first team meeting I will first pass around the cricket ball and then show highlights of this DVD. This will immediately dispel any preconceived notions of Cricket not being a "sport" as well as show the team what they are in for. In other words, this is not a sport for the faint of heart. Believe it or not, American Athletes love this stuff. The more "macho" the game the more they love it. My point is Americans need to see highlight reel type of stuff like the big 6 shot, the fast bowling, the guts of the batter as he stands in the crease knowing he very well could get hit by the ball, the great catches, the camaraderie after every great play act.. I also found a really good cricket website that has a great forum / discussion section it is www.bigcricket.com. Thank goodness for the internet!

I received an email from my Sunday Cricket team yesterday. Although there is no scheduled match, they are playing among themselves. Unfortunately, because I am on vacation I cannot attend. This really bums me out because playing with these guys has been so much fun and rewarding to me. I cherish the time I have spent with them. Hopefully, there will be a few more sessions before the winter weather kicks in. As I have stated before in this forum, I will be forever grateful to the members of the “Nashua Nukes”. They gave me my first chance, taught me the game and accepted me as not only a member of their team but more importantly as a friend. The entire community of Cricketers I have had the pleasure to meet, each and everyone is a class act. It is these people who have kept the game and all of the values it represents, alive in America. If it were not for these hero’s, guys like me would never have been able to find out and learn the game. Long Live the Nashua Nukes!

I have started the process of starting the All American team. Now I need advice as to what I need to do once I get a response to the below: Here is what I have come up with as a means of getting a team started. So far I plan on posting this in my gym ( 2 locations, lots of big strong athletes and the membership is in the 1000's). Placing it on the local cable access channels advertisements (its free to do this), Posting it in all 4 of my companies facilities and i'm seeing how much it costs to run it in a few papers. STILL HAVE THE DESIRE TO PLAY? Are you an athlete who still has the desire to play competitive sports? Do you want to be part of the first “All American Cricket Team” in the U.S? The Colonial Cricket Club needs you! Here is what we are looking for 1) Athletes who are true competitors. 2) Athletes who are committed to training. 3) Athletes with good baseball skills: *Pitching, Fielding, Batting, Throwing* If this sounds good to you and you think you have what it takes, Please send an email to colonialcricket@yahoo.com for more details. *PLEASE BE ADVISED: CRICKET IS A CONTACT SPORT SIMILAR TO BASEBALL AND THE BATSMAN FACES BALLS THAT ARE THROWN IN EXCESS OF 70 MPH & FIELDERS DO NO WEAR GLOVES.
One of the first things I will speak to the people who reply is the fact that all eyes will be on this team. They will be ground breaking revolutionaries. I am committed to do this and everyone on this board should start spreading the word about this venture so the momentum can start to build. You can be sure that as thing thing happens I am going to document every step. I fancy myself a journalist as well as a amatuer filmaker. I plan to inform newspapers about this as well as have a nice website. The way I see it: By end of Dec = Have a core group of guys for team. If possible recruit an experienced Cricketer(s)to serv as coach(s) and mentors Jan thru Feb = thru meetings and indoor practice in a gym learn the game and build our skills. Also start the work to secure a homefield March Thru April= Apply for membership in the Mass State Cricket League, start ordering equipment & gear. Get outside to start practicing. May = Try and schedule warm up matches June= Start the season

The Swami Speaks
Sorry for the pretentious topic line but I figured it would attract the most attention. My head has been spinning. Now that I am on vacation, I can really think with a clear head. I thought I had a decent game plan until I went to the MLCsite. From the minute I entered the site, my heart was pounding and my head was racing. I quickly realized that the MLC has done what the USACA has not. Having said that, I have the following thoughts;
1. There seems to be some back and forth about adults versus youths and which avenue would best serve the promotion of the game. I speak from experience when I say “If the adults play and the kids watch the kids will follow and emulate in an almost idol like fashion” That is the winning formula for American sports.
2. The MCL can accomplish in record time compared to what one person like myself is able to do as far as establishing and promoting the game in America.
3. Knowing this, I feel it is imperative that the leaders of the MLC immediately contact the key municipal leaders of Lowell, Mass and Manchester NH with the goal of establishing league affiliates. I say this because after reading “The Creation of American Team Sports” by George Kirsh, both of these cities played a major role in the pre Civil War success of Cricket alongside New York and Philadelphia. The Industrial Revolution started in these two cities and they are steeped in Cricket history. They would cherish the title of being “first in the nation to form American cricket teams”
4. Both of these cities pride themselves on their sporting heritage in fact in the last 5 years they have built baseball stadiums for minor league baseball teams that sell out every single game. There is also a huge competitive rivalry between these 2 Cities. I believe that it would not be any problem getting the proper cricket fields built and maintained as well as indoor nets facilities.
5. Both of these cities have a huge Cricket underworld that are starving for something like this and because they are major cities which are not all far from Boston the fan base is immense. Both of these cities have newspapers with huge circulations and the minute that something was proposed it would be all over the papers.
6. There is a huge talent pool in these areas both in and around these cities. If an open tryout was promoted correctly and held, not one but many talent rich teams would be the end result. There is an endless supply of current and ex baseball players as well as athletes of all kinds spanning all ages. Who wouldn’t jump at the chance of being part of a first in the nation American Cricket team who would play in front of a huge number of fans and basically be considered celebrities.
7. I firmly believe that if the MLC did it the right way this would be a great success not only in these states but it would become a national / international news story. The Brits would soon know that it was 1776 all over again and the “Colonials” were coming.
8. The most crucial thing about the MLC is the 20/20 format. I know it’s not the traditional number of overs but the purpose is to get the talent and exposure so you then you have what you need for a true International team.
9. The ultimate goal is to get Americans to play the game. It should not be limited to Americans only, anyone should be eligible but I’m sure you will find that plenty of Americans will be on every roster.
10. I have many ideas as to how this should be marketed and presented but that will come later. The first step is to get the interest of the MLC. How can we do this?
11. I am willing to do whatever I can to help the MLC accomplish this. Not to sound conceited but if I had to compare myself to a cricketer it would most certainly be Kevin Pieterson of England in both looks and physical stature. I could easily pass for a professional athlete. The only difference would be that I consider myself to be much more eloquent and professional as a person. I also think that Pieterson plays the type of Cricket as a batsman that the US would produce. He is a hybrid of Cricket and Baseball in my opinion. What I am saying is that if the MCL needs a liaison to accomplish this I am volunteering my services for any duties such as information gathering, meeting, and promoting.
I could go on forever but I think I have said enough. Please provide feedback on all points. In a nutshell, I believe that the MCL and not the USACA can get us where we need to go.

Man, the last 2 days have been a whirlwind. Someone on the uscricket discussion forum directed me to this website http://majorleaguecricket.com/. I couldn’t believe my eyes at first. It is the Major League Cricket website. You have to see the logo it is awesome. These guys are the real deal. The website itself is very professional. They are holding a big tournament at the end of the month in Florida. Based on what I saw it is the big time. If I had the time off I would love to go to this. I hope they post a lot of the action. It would be even better if it was televised. I wish them luck!! On the site it even has plans for an 8 team professional league where American presence is required. I say to myself, “if the league started today, I would probably make the team”. It says late 2006 is the goal and television deals are possible, GREAT JOB GUYS!! If this were to happen it would be great for the game in America. I am also perplexed as to why the MCL can do so much and the USACA does so little. It is awesome to see the MCL take charge.

As part of a discussion on the uscricket website, I received some feedback on this blog. I can’t believe the encouragement I have received as well as the positive feedback. My intention has always been to join an existing club in the spring of 2006. After digesting some of the feedback I received, I have changed my plans. It appears that my mission would be best served by trying to assemble an “All American Cricket team.” As I have always felt and said from day one “ I feel as though I am on a spiritual mission and I am only the messenger” I will take this feedback as another cosmic sign as to what I need to do next. Before I continue, let me make this clear. “This has absolutely nothing to do with thinking Americans are any better than anyone else or not wanting ex pats on an American team. If it were not for the kindness of the Indian guys who took me under their wing and taught me the game, I would not be in the position I am today. I will be forever grateful to them!!” From day, one my ultimate dream was to see a team of Americans compete against the best in the world as a full member of the ICC. As I read somewhere, “If the US won the World cup it would be the biggest story ever in the United States just as the US Olympic Hockey team victory in 1980”. I have spent long hours planning details of what I would wish for a team of Americans. The navy jackets, the bus, the logo, the players etc…It would be a team of ultimate gentlemen who possess the manners and admirable qualities that this great game represents. They would be role models to the youth of America and help change the image of what American sports / athletes have become. If I am to try and start my own team in the Mass State Cricket League at least I am in the position to be a leader. From what I can see, the first thing I need to do is recruit some players. I figure I could reach a pretty good audience by placing a free add on the cable access channels as well as having friends who are interested join up. I would basically ask anyone who is interested to email me to start. The next step would be to get a meeting place where I could start educating everyone on all the facets of the game using videos, books and first hand information. I have some connections so I would try and see if I could have access to an indoor gym for practicing thru ought the winter. I would also try and secure a field for practice and home matches. Again, I have some good connections and I wouldn’t rule out the ability of getting a real pitch put in by the start of the season. From what I can see I only have to apply for membership in the MSCL and pay the fee to play in the 2nd 11 division. The more I think about this the more I am starting to believe that I can pull it off. Fortunately I have 5 days of vacation starting today and will use the time to make a detailed game plan as to how I am going to get this done. In the interim, please provide any and all suggestions that will help me in this mission. If you knowof anyone who lives in the NE part of MA or the Southern part of NH, please have them contact me at bethecoffeecup81@yahoo.com. Who knows, if there is a lot of response we could end up with a few teams. It goes without saying that if I am willing to do this, I would expect any Americans who know the game in other parts of the US to consider doing the same!!

I finished up the last Ashes 2005 DVD this morning and I must repeat, Kevin Pieterson is the man! It is the ultimate self confirmation that I don’t to possess the “technical” style of batting that I have been constantly trying to master. Sure, the technical aspects have certainly assisted with curing me of all the baseball habits I had but I always knew that I did my best when my instincts took over and I just let it rip naturally. The ultimate goal is to protect the stumps, hit the ball and not get out. I have excellent hand / eye coordination and being very strong allows me to move the bat around very quickly. After going over all my journal entries I realized that i have come along way in a short time. It has taken almost 4 months of unbelievably hard work on my part to get to the point where I know the rules, the scoring, the umpiring signals, the gear, the techniques, the history, the players, the cultures and everything else. It is such a great feeling to know that now all I have to do is play the game and start excelling. You have to remember that when I started, I knew absolutely nothing about this game. I found a great website www.uscricket.com and for the first time I realized that I am not alone in my passion for Cricket in the U.S. There are others like me and it is a great feeling. They have a great user forum section and I am also not alone in my frustration with the USACA and their inability to promote Cricket in the US. Still, I can only do my part and I feel that once next season comes and I get to show my stuff and start telling my story that I will truly get to help the cause. I don’t want to come off sounding insensitive but until Americans can see an actual American(s) succeed at his game they will not have the interest we are all striving for. I have said this from day one “America can dominate this sport if they had a few good spokesman to create the interest”. I am certainly up for that task as I am sure many of you would be. America has the best athletes. Right out of the box Americans would dominate the fielding aspect of the game. Even watching the Ashes, I saw dropped catches, missed opportunities on rollers through the fielding circle ect. Because of the baseball instincts, Americans have very good reaction reflexes and would certainly stop many of these. There was also a lack of speed in the deep field. It appears that every ball that makes it though the fielding circle is taken for granted to score 4 runs. Americans are born hustlers and I would have to imagine that with more speed some of these could be chased down and stopped for 2 runs. As far as bowling goes, there would be a learning curve but American baseball pitchers can throw the heat better than anyone. Along with fielding, batting would be America’s strong point. Hand eye coordination is inherent to baseball players and once they learned the swing that would be all she wrote. This all sounds good but until we have the interest and participation it is just a dream. Just imagine the impact if some famous baseball players like Roger Clemons, Jose Canseco, Derek Jeter, ect.. made the announcement that after they retire, or even as a hobby, they were taking up cricket. The interest would be immense. If ESPN showed 30 seconds of a few Ashes 2005 highlights of Pieterson smashing the ball into the crowd, Ponting taking one to the head, Hoggard throwing the heat, and Warne landing the ball on the pitch and it jumps 90 degrees to the left and sending the stumps flying it would create interest, believe me. At the gym today I worked my biceps, wrists and forearms and also hit the ball around for 20 minutes. It is so frustrating not having anyone to practice with. If they had nets around here I would be at them as much as possible. I am starting to review the gear I want to purchase, I need a new rubber 5.5 oz ball to throw in the gym and I want to get gloves as soon as possible so I can wear them whenever I am holding the bat. I also want to get my leg pads so when I am doing my shuttle runs and running in the gym I get used to wearing them. My goal is to have the gloves and leg pads by Christmas. I could either get a new snowboard or all my Cricket gear. The choice is easy and if I am careful I can get one more year out of my snowboard.
I finished up the last Ashes 2005 DVD this morning and I must repeat, Kevin Pieterson is the man! I continued watching the Ashes DVD when I woke up at my usual 4:00am. It was the last DVD and it is the final tests match of the series. Obviously, I know England ends up winning but it is still great stuff. Shane Warne of Australia is the real deal. He comes off as cocky and maybe a little arrogant but he backs it up with his play. Not only is this guy a tremendous bowler but he is also one hell of a batsmen. Before I saw this DVD, I was impressed with Matthew Hoggard from his lessons on the BBC Sport website. I am still very impressed by this guy. As far as batsman go, I have to go with Kevin Pieterson from England. This guy can crush the ball. If I had to pick a cricketer who I think my style is similar to it is him. Most of the other batsman had the same mechanical technique in their swing but Pieterson had a touch of a baseball swing and it was a powerful stroke. He reminded me of Jose Canseco in his prime. When I saw him bat, his style immediately reminded me of how I have approached my batting in the fact that I have a lot of muscle and power and am very quick with the bat. This DVD was beneficial because I was able to see the fastest style of bowling (90 plus MPH most times) and I was constantly saying to my self “I would stand in against it and not be intimidated.” As I have said earlier, I have been hit many times as a tight end in football, hit many times with the lacrosse ball and many times with a baseball and lived to see another day. With Cricket, I will be wearing a helmet and pads. Now that I seen the best, top level bowlers, I can confidently say that when I play in the Massachusetts State Cricket League (MSCL) in the Spring, I will have no problem batting against the bowlers who I will play against. I will study this DVD over and over again until the season starts. I will continue practicing, training, and eating right as always. My motivation and confidence are at an all time high now. If I had one wish, it would be to have someone to bowl to me all the time either in the gym or outside thru ought the long winter months. Hopefully I can find someone but until then, I am still on my own.

Watched some more Ashes early in the morning and then went to the gym. For one solid hour, all I did was practice my batting swing by throwing the tennis ball against the wall. Most of all I practiced trying to hit balls that rose up towards my head and in close because base on what I saw on the DVD, a good number of balls pitch that way and I need to be prepared for them. On the way home I stopped by the field where my usual Sunday team was having a match. I did not get selected because I played in the last match they had. I still wanted to show support for them. This turned out to be a bittersweet event because form the moment I got there, it seemed like it was being played in slow motion. After watching the Ashes DVD with bowlers throwing at 90 MPH, the tennis ball seemed like a toy and it was moving so slow. I swear if I got my chance I would have scored a century. It was at this moment that I knew that there was no turning back for me and I was completely ready for the next level. I talked with the guys for a while and then wished them luck and went home. It was really sad because it could be the last time that I see these guys and they were the ones who gave me my first chance and took me in as one of their own. The “swami” will never forget this and will be forever grateful. After another excellent day with the family, I ended the night watching more of the Ashes as well as a short story from F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Once again, up early to watch more Ashes action before the kids got up. I spent another great day with my family. Late in the afternoon I went up the field to practice bowling. The BBC sport master classes coupled with the Ashes DVD have really helped me understand the techniques of bowling. I am bowling onto a moist gravel surface which has hardly any bounce to it so I basically just practice my length, line, velocity and accuracy. I practice leg spin and seam as well as trying to learn the fine art of swing. If I had to categorize myself as to what style bowler I am at his point, I would have to say a fast seam bowler. After the kids went to bed, it was more Ashes and some F. Scott Fitzgerald reading. These last few days have been like a whirlwind.

I had the day off today as did my kids. I love days like this because it seems like I spend so much time at work instead of with my family. I got up early so I could watch some more Ashes action and then had a great time with the family. Late in the afternoon, I went up the field and practiced some bowling. It was really cold (35 degrees with the wind) so I only practiced for about 45minutes. Spent some more time with the kids and as soon as they went to bed, right back to the Ashes and ended the night reading a couple of short stories form the new F. Scott Fitzgerald book I got from the library. I still cannot put into words how valuable the Ashes DVD has been.

I have been working with gentleman from England this week. He is one of our vendors. I was telling him that my Ashes 2005 DVD set has not arrived yet. He told me that it could take some time but I should get it. That was comforting and I guess I will continue to wait, after all I wouldn’t think that what I consider the “holy grail” of cricket, Lords, would ever take me to the cleaners. Just as I suspected, Lords came through with the goods and my DVD was at my house when I got home from work. It was exactly what I had envisioned , 3 DVD’s in a holder and the back edge of the DVD’s formed a picture of the Ashes urn. After explaining to my wife what it was, I raced to the DVD player with the anticipation of a young boy on Christmas morning. This excitement was short lived as I was dealt an unexpected, crushing blow. My DVD player came up with the message of “unsupported format”. “How could this be” I said to myself. After some research on line, I found out the format of the DVD, because it is a product of England, is not supported by DVD players in the United States. To say I was devastated would be an understatement. Just when I was about to face the fact that I had made a grave mistake and would have to spend more money to buy a region free DVD player, I read that it should play on my laptop or computer without any issues. From what I read, I should use WINDVD and it should allow me to change the region from # 1 (U.S) to # 2 (U.K). With much apprehension, I put the DVD in my laptop and launched WINDVD. I was prompted to change the region and once I did, SUCCESS, my beloved Ashes 2005 DVD started playing in all it’s glory. First, let me say that this is more than I expected. The clarity, footage, coverage, sound, etc..are unbelievable! I have finally witnessed a game of real Cricket. This is the missing link that I have been waiting for. I can see real bowling, batting technique, fielding and everything that up until this moment, I could only imagine and dream of. Even seeing a real wicket was pure joy. Above all, I was witnessing the masters of the game in all their glory. After watching some of this I came to the following conclusion: I know I will succeed at this sport and now more that ever, I know I have what it takes. I am now more motivated that ever before!!!

Halloween was great for the kids last night and for once work didn’t interfere with my plans. At the gym this morning I worked my biceps, forearms, wrists and abdomen. I then got in about 200 minutes of batting practice in the basketball court. I continue to throw the hard tennis ball against the wall and then try to hit at various stages and heights of the bounce. I am practice front foot, back foot, drives, cuts etc.. I have also been experimenting with a shot I read about in “ Beyond A Boundary” I’m not quite sure of the official name but if a ball pitches really high so that it is over you head. Instead of raising the bat over your head and slapping the ball down with the face of the bat you watch the ball and just as you anticipate that the ball will pass over your head area, you list the bat up in front and at the last minute, you raise it like you were going to shovel dirt and throw it over your shoulder. If you get it right the ball will be go behind you into the long stop, fine leg or third man areas. It is all in the timing but this could be a good technique and I will continue to practice it.

Today was triceps day at the gym as well as some abdominal work. I also got in some batting practice. Batting never gets boring and I have the time to practice all my shots. I continue to follow the credo which I have found most follow. “see the ball, anticipate the pitch, get your eyes behind , get your feet where they need to be in order to get the ball where you want it to go”. I am still reading the short stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald and pretty much use his style as my inspiration as I continue to write my own material.

I worked on shoulders and my abdomen this morning. I can’t wait for my Ashes 2005 video to get here. Hopefully, it will be here by tomorrow. I have to work late tonight but hopefully it won’t interfere with the gym tomorrow. We are playing a match amongst ourselves this Sunday. I don’t mind because I play the same way no matter what. I give 100% at all times plus I want to face our bowlers because they are good and I want to bat against the best. Who knows, I might even get a chance to bowl because it is a practice.
